What is a trailer winch and why is it needed?

>A trailer winch is an essential piece of equipment for any professional tow truck and roadside assistance. Well-chosen and correctly installed, it significantly increases the safety and efficiency of work. In what way? Read on to find out more.

What is a trailer winch?

A winch is a mechanical device used to pull a vehicle onto a trailer platform. Its main task is to move the car using a steel or synthetic rope, powered electrically, hydraulically or manually.

12V winches are usually used for tow trucks, and can be connected directly to the electrical system of the towing vehicle. Thanks to them, it is possible to load the car onto the platform safely and in a precise manner, even if it is not able to move , “on its own”.

Why is a winch essential in vehicle transport?

The trailer winch makes loading vehicles noticeably simpler, especially damaged, unpowered or locked vehicles. Instead of using physical force, it will suffice to attach a rope to the tow hitch and activate the mechanism — the car will enter the platform in a stable and controlled manner. This solution not only speeds up the work, but also increases operator safety and minimizes the risk of damage to the vehicle. In many cases, especially with steep ascents or heavier cars, the tow truck winch even becomes an indispensable piece of equipment. This is also true for off-road cars traveling over muddy terrain.

Types trailer winches

Choosing the right type of winch depends on the intensity of use, the weight of the vehicles being transported and the power source.

Electric winch (12V)

The 12V winch is powered by the vehicle battery or a separate battery mounted on the trailer. Its advantages are ease of installation, quiet operation and high efficiency for medium loads (up to about 3.5-5 tons of pull). It’s ideal for tow trucks serving passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

Hand winch

A simple and inexpensive solution that does not require power. The manual winch is powered by a crank, and its pulling capacity is limited – usually up to 1-1.6 tons. It works well for emergency situations, occasional use or transporting light vehicles.

Hydraulic winch

The most advanced and durable type of winch, mainly used in professional tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles. It is characterized by high torque and high overload resistance. However, it requires an elaborate hydraulic system and higher installation costs.

Each of the above options has its uses. The key question is: which trailer winch will work best in your case? Read on to find out.

Which winch is suitable for a tow truck? What to look for when choosing one?

When choosing a winch for a trailer, you should be guided first of all by technical parameters and real demand. The most important of these is the lifting capacity (pulling capacity) –  it should be at least 1.5 times the weight of the heaviest vehicle you plan to transport. Example: if the car weighs 1500 kg, the winch should have a pulling capacity of at least 2250 kg.

The second important factor is the type of power supply. For most users, a 12V winch that is easy to integrate into the vehicle’s electrical system is  ideal. If you plan on heavy use or transporting heavier vehicles, a hydraulic winch or a winch powered by 24V is worth considering.

The length and type of rope are also worth considering – steel ropes are most often used for tow trucks, but synthetic ropes (lighter, safer in case of breakage) are becoming more and more popular. It is also worth noting the availability of spare parts, the assembly method and the presence of a remote control, especially useful for one-person handling.

How to mount a winch to a tow truck

Before proceeding with the installation, make sure that the frame of the tow truck is properly designed to transfer the forces generated by the winch.

First install a mounting plate, preferably made of steel, with a thickness suitable for the pulling force. It should be screwed to the structure of the tow truck at several points (usually 6-8 screws). The body of the truck will be mounted on this base.

If you choose a 12V winch, the electrical connection requires sturdy wires with a fuse and a remote control switch (wired or wireless remote control). Finally, check the if the winch operates properly under a light load before using it in real conditions.

Bottom line: which winch to use

If you’ve ever tried to load a faulty car without the right equipment, you know how problematic it can be. A winch for a tow truck solves this problem – it works precisely, eliminates the risk of damage and allows you to work even alone. Properly selected and installed, it becomes an indispensable support in the daily work of a roadside assistance driver.
