The vehicle card – everything you need to know

>The vehicle card is a document that is a kind of “ID card” for cars. Until recently, it was required for many administrative purposes. However, changes in the law introduced on September 4, 2022 have significantly modified the meaning and requirements for holding a vehicle card. In this article, we will explain what a vehicle card is, where its number is and whether it is still needed for vehicle registration.

What is a vehicle card?

A vehicle card is a document in the form of a small booklet that identifies the vehicle and its owner. It is slightly larger than the standard registration certificate and is made on special, damage-resistant paper. Inside this document there is key information about the vehicle, such as the owner’s personal data, confirmation of registration or re-registration of the vehicle, technical data about the car and its registration history.

Although the vehicle card was a mandatory document for every car registered after 1999, legal changes that entered into force on September 4, 2022, eliminated the need to have it for new and imported vehicles.

Where is the vehicle card number?

The vehicle card number is a unique identifier that appears both on the front of the document and in the vehicle registration system. It is required when verifying the authenticity of a document and when applying for a duplicate. This number can also be found in the vehicle registration certificate, which makes it easier to check and compare the data with the vehicle card.

Is a vehicle card needed at all?

A vehicle card is no longer required when registering new cars or those imported from abroad. It is also not necessary for sales and purchase transactions. However, it may still be required when:

  • changing vehicle data if the car has undergone significant technical modifications
  • registering vehicles registered in Poland before 1999

It is worth remembering that the lack of a vehicle card does not affect the legality of using the vehicle, but may be required by some institutions in particular situations. Unfortunately, the amendments to the regulations did not take into account all aspects the vehicle card’s use.

Can a car be registered without the vehicle card?

In light of current regulations, registering a car without a vehicle card is possible and does not pose any problems. To register a car, all you need to do is present the registration certificate, the sales and purchase agreement as well as your ID card. Neither a vehicle card nor inspection stickers are required for new or imported vehicles, which significantly simplifies and speeds up the registration process.

How to check if the vehicle card was issued

There are several ways to check whether a vehicle card has been issued for a given vehicle. The easiest is to refer to the registration certificate, where there should be a card issue date. Another method is to use online databases, such as the vehicle’s history available at historiapojazdu.gov.pl, where you can obtain such information after entering the registration number and VIN of the vehicle. The mPojazd website available in the mObywatel 2.0 application also offers access to information about the vehicle card.

Summary: the vehicle card a relic of the past

The vehicle card, although no longer required for most vehicles, can still be useful in certain situations. Changes in the regulations have significantly simplified the vehicle registration process and reduced the costs associated with the entire procedure. Having a vehicle card is now optional, unless you make significant changes to the vehicle, e.g. change the engine or drive type.
